about

This song is a letter to my father who passed away when I was 10 years old. His death has absolutely defined who I am, and a big part of me will always be that little boy swinging from his arms. This piece has taken on a whole new meaning after my mother’s passing in 2019, as I face a future with no elders left to show me the way.
It is something like a final loss of innocence.
This song is the most raw and personal thing I have ever written. I would like to dedicate it to everyone who has lost someone or is staring down the end of that road with a parent, a lover, a child, a sibling or a friend.
Grief is a coat we keep sewing pockets on to store those dreams and last words never said.

lyrics

I don’t know where you are
I think I know just where I’ve been
Had to live a life without you
Guess I paid the price for your sins
When I get too tired to walk
Wish I could climb up on your back
But when bones have turned to ashes
I forget the sound of our laugh

Stumble in the dark
with no one to lead the way
All I got left of you is your picture in a frame
and your name
to bring me home

You called out the end the end of the song
before I had a chance to sing
Left me spinning on the carousel
Reaching for the brass ring
You know I caught me an angel
who gave birth to a fairy queen
wish you could look into her eyes
see all the parts of you and me

Reach up to find your hand
and the right words to say
And I see you in the mirror
as my hair turns a lighter gray
whisper your name
to bring me home
